Death Comadre Curriculum

The Cihuapactli Collective is honored to offer the pilot of the Death Comadre Curriculum from August 19 - December 2nd, 2023. There are many titles for those that facilitate end of life transitions such as a Death Doula, Death Midwife or Death Comadre. Because the work of the Collective spans womb to tomb, some refer to themselves as Womb to Tomb Comadres. Regardless of the aspect of transition that you are called to support, in the training you will have the opportunity to receive a variety of certificates to facilitate different aspects of grief and loss.  The in-person training will be broken up into two major sections regarding Sacred Transitions and The Business of Death. During Sacred Transitions we will review both Indigenous and Western teachings regarding end of life transitions with special emphasis on prenatal and infant loss, suicide and unexpected loss, helping children cope with grief and loss & pregnancy release. During The Business of Death segment we will review estate planning, death binders, life insurance, and funeral arrangements.

Those who complete all parts of the training will receive Death Comadre certification through the Cihuapactli Collective. Death Midwifery certification is available through this pilot program as is Prenatal and Infant Loss certification through our community partners. Individuals can participate in the training topics that they are interested in. There will be individual registrations for each subject. For questions please write to both Enjolie@cihuapactlicollective.org and Gail@cihuapactlicollective.org.

The Cihuapactli Collective strives to be inclusive of our community. This pilot training is open to all but is BIPOC preferred. Spanish language translation and interpretation is available. We are working on offering future versions of our trainings for everyone.

The majority of the training will take place at the Sagrado Galleria in Phoenix, 6427 S. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85042. Food will be provided and childcare is available on site with prior registration. Registration is open until a day before each event. Some segments of the training have a capacity. Please register early.

About our Presenters

Dr. Enjolie Lafaurie

Enjolie is a grandmother, mom, sister, comadre, psychologist, hypnotherapist, womb-to-tomb comadre, and business owner of Inspired Therapies, LLC. Originally from Southern California, she is Afro-Cuban (Taino/Arawak) and Guatemalan (Maya). Her role as a Death Comadre surfaced as early as childhood. One of the most impactful experiences was upon losing both her father and husband a day apart from one another in 2009. Upon deciding to become certified as a death midwife, her family's response was, “don’t we do this already?” The Collective has been taught by our elders, ways to support families with ceremony in times of birth and death. Enjolie and many others feel privileged to support the community through those sacred transitions and to support in practical and logistical areas associated with the business of death.

Luana Morales

Luana Morales is an Afro-Boricua Birth, Death, and Ancestral healing arts practitioner: birth and bereavement doula, death midwife, circle keeper, officiant, reiki master teacher, ritual guide, spiritual coach, facilitator, and herbal apprentice devoted to reclaiming and reimagining our birth, death, and Afro-Indigenous healing practices. She is also the Community Care Weaver for the Movement Sustainability Commons, a program of Resist, in Boston MA.  In 2017 she co- founded Seeds of Our Ancestors, a mobile interdisciplinary, intergenerational, and multi-lineage healing squad in service to movement spaces devoted to healing justice.

She started the Spirit of the Earth Carry me Home Project as a response to support low income/undocumented families with the financial impact of the death of a loved one. Spring 2021 she started the Journey of the 13 Moons cohort, a sacred BIPOC only space for folks to reconnect/discover their medicine, reclaim the exiled parts of themselves, and bring healing to their bloodline.

All her work is led by joy and pleasure, rooted in our ancestral earth based practices. She co-creates containers that support reflection, experimentation, healing, learning, collaboration, and are birthed in the name of our individual and collective healing and liberation.
